Exterior Window Trim and Siding Repair In Charlottesville VA
Problem: This exterior window trim had rotted, and also some of the MDF composite siding around the outside of the trim. The rotting MDF was tricky because on one hand it is a discontinued item and so new matching pieces could not be purchased, and on the other hand replacing all of the siding would be impractical given that this house was part of an attached townhome structure in which all units share the same siding.
Repair: Fortunately the deteriorating siding was within an inch of the rotten window trim, so after removing the rotting trim pieces, I wrapped the window with thin fiber‑cement HardieBoard to cover and weather‑seal the deteriorating edges of the siding and then installed new MiraTEC weather‑resistant trim pieces cut to the same width as the original trim. I painted the trim white to match the other windows of the structure and painted the fiber‑cement board the color of the siding so it would blend into the background.
